Bur Dubai hotels put you in old Dubai, on the west bank of the creek: the restored Al Fahidi quarter, the Textile Souk and the creekside promenade at Al Seef, with wooden abras crossing to Deira for AED 1. It is also central, with two metro lines and Dubai International Airport a short drive away.

The trade-offs: there is no beach, the main roads are busy, and the area is spread out, so the old town is a metro or taxi ride from Wafi and Al Jaddaf. This guide explains the five parts of Bur Dubai, our pick of 11 hotels and how to get around. For other areas, see where to stay in Dubai.
Is Bur Dubai the right area for you?
Bur Dubai suits travellers who want old Dubai, good transport links and a wide choice of prices, but not a beach holiday.
It suits you if:
- You want to walk the Al Fahidi quarter, the souks and the creek, and cross to Deira by abra
- You want a central base on the metro, with the airport and Downtown both within easy reach
- You are on a budget or a longer stay and want good-value hotels or suites with kitchens
- You are visiting Dubai Healthcare City or Wafi
Think twice if:
- A beach is the main point of your trip (see our Jumeirah beach hotels guide or Dubai Marina guide instead)
- You want to be within walking distance of Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall (see Downtown Dubai)
- You want the Gold Souk on your doorstep and the shortest airport transfer (see Deira)
The parts of Bur Dubai and what each is like for a stay

Bur Dubai stretches several kilometres along the creek, from Shindagha to Al Jaddaf, and the parts feel very different. Booking.com’s “Bur Dubai” search even includes hotels in Downtown, so check the address and map before you book.
- Al Fahidi, Al Seef and Shindagha (heritage and creekside). The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, also called Al Bastakiya, is the restored old town of wind-tower houses, galleries and museums. Al Seef next to it is a 1.8 km creekside promenade completed in 2017 in a traditional style. To the north is the restored historic district of Shindagha. Nearest metro: Sharaf DG (formerly Al Fahidi) for Al Fahidi and Al Seef, and Al Ghubaiba for Shindagha, both on the Green Line.
- Al Souk Al Kabeer, Meena Bazaar and Mankhool. The old souk district: the Textile Souk by the abra station, and the Grand Mosque, whose minaret is the tallest in the city. Mankhool, behind it, is a residential and shopping district with many mid-range hotels, close to BurJuman mall. Nearest metro: Sharaf DG and BurJuman, where the Red and Green Lines meet.
- Karama. Served by ADCB station on the Red Line. Its hotels score noticeably lower with Booking.com guests than the rest of Bur Dubai (the best we found scored 8.4), so we have not picked one here.
- Oud Metha, Healthcare City and Wafi. An inland district that takes in the Wafi mall complex and several large resort hotels. It is served by Oud Metha and Dubai Healthcare City stations (Green Line); the latter is close to Wafi.
- Al Jaddaf. Newer hotels on the creek’s southern stretch, including the Culture Village waterfront. It is further from the old town, but Al Jadaf and Creek metro stations are on the Green Line.

Is Bur Dubai safe?
Yes for everyday purposes: the US State Department says “violent crimes and crimes against property in the UAE are rare”, although its UAE advisory has been at Level 3 (“Reconsider travel”) since 29 August 2026 because of terrorism and other risks. In Bur Dubai, watch for crowds, traffic and local customs rather than street crime.
- The souks and abra stations can get crowded, so keep bags closed and agree prices before you buy.
- Cross the main roads only at designated crossings. GOV.UK warns that crossing elsewhere is illegal and that vehicles often do not stop at zebra crossings.
- Dress modestly in public areas such as malls, and around the mosques and temples. For women, GOV.UK advises covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people.
- Use licensed taxis (cream with a coloured roof; pink roofs have female drivers), Careem or Uber.

Getting around from Bur Dubai
Bur Dubai has both metro lines, abras across the creek and plenty of taxis.
- Metro: the Green Line stops at Al Ghubaiba, Sharaf DG, BurJuman, Oud Metha, Dubai Healthcare City, Al Jadaf and Creek. The Red Line stops at BurJuman and ADCB (Karama), with direct trains to Airport Terminals 1 and 3 and to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. Trains run from 5am (8am on Sundays) until midnight, or 1am on Friday nights. See our Dubai Metro guide.
- Abras: the traditional abra from the Bur Dubai abra station to Deira Old Souq costs AED 1 per person, paid in cash, according to the RTA. Heritage abras from Al Fahidi and Al Seef across to the Deira side cost AED 2.
- Dubai International (DXB): hotel listings put it about 6 to 8 km away, a short taxi ride outside rush hour. Airport taxis start at AED 25. The Red Line reaches BurJuman without a change, with up to two pieces of luggage, including hand luggage.
- Al Maktoum International (DWC): the airport is about 37 km south-west of the city, so expect a much longer taxi ride than to DXB. See our airport to hotel guide for transfers.
Things to do near Bur Dubai

Old Dubai is best explored on foot, with guided tours and creek cruises as the paid extras.
- Walk the lanes of the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, then follow the creek along Al Seef. Al Fahidi Fort, home of the Dubai Museum, is at the edge of the quarter. Dubai Culture announced its temporary closure for renovation in 2021; we could not confirm a reopening by 21 October 2026, so check before you go.
- Browse the Textile Souk, see the Grand Mosque from outside, and visit the restored houses of Shindagha. The Shiva temple and the Gurudwara moved to Jebel Ali in January 2024; the Krishna temple remains in Bur Dubai.
- Cross the creek by abra to the Gold and Spice Souks in Deira.
- Join a guided old Dubai street food tour with an abra ride, rated 4.9 by more than 7,600 guests, or a smaller historic old Dubai tour of the creek and souks, rated 4.9 by more than 190 guests. In the evening, book a dinner cruise on a dhow.
- See old and new Dubai from the Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park, a 150-metre frame with old Dubai to the north and the newer city to the south.
Best time to stay in Bur Dubai
November to March is the most comfortable time for walking Al Fahidi, the souks and the creek, and also the busiest. From June to September the heat makes daytime walking hard, so plan sightseeing for early morning or evening. See our Dubai weather guide for month-by-month detail.
