Dubai Marina is where many first-time visitors end up staying, and it’s easy to see why. You get a waterfront promenade lined with cafés and restaurants, a public beach a few minutes away at JBR, and a tram and metro that connect you to the rest of the city.
The trade-offs are worth knowing before you book. Downtown Dubai and the airport are a 30 to 45 minute drive away, the area is busy and lively rather than quiet, and in some towers your view may be the building next door. This guide explains who the Marina suits, how it differs from JBR next door, and our pick of hotels for every budget.
Is Dubai Marina the right area for you?
It suits you if:
- You want the beach, restaurants and nightlife within walking distance
- You are travelling with children and want a beach hotel with pools
- You are visiting Dubai Media City, Internet City, JLT or Expo City for work
- You like having lots to do on your doorstep in the evening
Think twice if:
- Most of your plans are around Downtown, the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall
- You want to explore old Dubai, Deira and the souks
- You are looking for a quiet, low-key stay
If Downtown is your focus, it can still work: the metro gets you there in about half an hour. For a short stopover, our guide to Dubai airport hotels may suit you better.
Dubai Marina or JBR: what is the difference?
People often use the two names for the same area, but they are slightly different places side by side.
- Dubai Marina is the cluster of towers around a long man-made canal, with the Marina Walk promenade running along the water. Most hotels here are not on the beach, though some give guests access to a beach club or a sister resort.
- JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) is the beachfront strip next to the Marina. Its outdoor promenade, The Walk, is full of shops and restaurants, and the hotels here sit on or just across from the sand.
In short: choose JBR if the beach is the point of your trip, and the Marina if you prefer waterfront dining and slightly better value. Compare everything available in Dubai Marina and JBR.
